If the alterations shown here were made to the centre of the maze, it would have the conventional double standard layout. Matthews writing in 1922 shows the maze as having a slightly smaller centre, which is joined to the innermost circuit of the path at five places (the original point of entry and the four places coloured light brown in this diagram). This suggests that:
